Blogging, MySpace, Wikis, Facebook etc.

My kids are into facebook, in a big way. Many of the libraries are not into social software which is why we do not have msn. We wanted a safe way to have teens share their ideas which is why we are using blog. I almost wanted to go facebook but we will try one more year with blog.

Do you use facebook, blogs, wikis? What do you like about Facebook?

I've preferred to refrain from using Facebook ever since I heard about it. I understand that it's a popular social networking website, and nearly all of my friends are using it, but I can't bring myself to the fact that anyone can access the personal information posted on your blog, profile, etc. Facebook has also been in the news quite a few times lately, and I personally know someone who now has some difficulties with her elementary school principal because that principal was offended by a blog entry. Plus, some people spend hours daily on Facebook, all the more reason to try avoiding it.

Hey waterfall,

Nice to have you back with us.

My kids are using this site. I too was surprised by how much personal information is on your individual profile.

Yes, my son comes in the door and goes to the computer. He does spend way too much time playing with Facebook.

One positive thing is that he is able to keep in touch with kids from high school who have now spanned out all over.

Any website can get you in trouble. My teacher where students rated teachers got some kids in trouble, in one of the local schools.

When we were trying to decide the format for summer reading, we wanted something that teens could do from home without coming into the library but still feel connected to a group.

Another factor for me is that some of the members are 11 or 12. I try to be very careful. This blog is only accessible by invitation.

great points, f.

I think that you should limit his time on Facebook ect. because he shouldn't be spending all his time talking ot his friends. I could understand text messaging his friends but not for that long. He must have different hobbies to keep him busy.

And by the way; I'm only 12 and I have access to this blog.

Hi, Bobtan:

Thanks for the tip. I should have mentioned that my son is 18. At this stage, I do not say too much.

He also watches sports, participates in sports and plays video games.

Hey, Lisa:

I agree.

What impresses me most is when I talk to you guys, in the library, you are all very smart and tech savvy. You do not give out information unless you feel secure.
You are much more worldly than I was at your age.

Hey, i don't use Facebook either. I think having the Teen SUmmer reading club through is a better idea then having it on Facebook. Like everyone else mentioned it might not be safe, and like anyone can join and even leave a rude/inappropriate comment on Facebook. Also, I think that through the blog, we feel more connected and than through Facebook. And some people are not allowed to have facebook, so the blog is better. Its safe and easy to use.
